ECMWF - European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - is the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, an intergovernmental organization responsible for receiving, processing, and transmitting meteorological data, as well as carrying out scientific research aimed at improving existing weather prediction models.
The Centre includes 23 member states and 12 cooperating states, employing over 450 international staff across three locations. It serves a dual role as both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing global numerical weather forecasts and other data for its member and cooperating states, as well as the broader community.
ECMWF established its Data Centre in Bologna through a hosting agreement signed by Italy, ECMWF, and the Emilia-Romagna Region. In Bologna, ECMWF has brought scientific excellence in computing, weather research, and climate change, along with one of the world’s most significant and structured meteorological data archives.
